Hi
I am not an MP. I hold no political office. I hold no job involved in politics. I am not even a member of any political party.
Sorry if you think people have to be in politics to object to the lousy government we have had over the last 13 years! I simply hate what Blair, Brown and New Labour have done to my country whilst in power.
Even positive things like improved schools, new hospitals etc. have been completely overshadowed by the financial failures which mean that we have had to go into debt to pay for them!
I am not the only one who thinks like this. Just wait until people start suffering financially from increased taxes, increased bills etc. Then New Labour will really become a scapegoat!

The BCS was introduced in 1982 when Thatcher was Prime minister, it wasn't a Labour initiative.

From the large amount of research into peoples perception of crime it is influenced most greatly by the media, and not people personal experience of crime, this would provide insight into why people fear crime nationally and not locally, although I cannot speak to the new 2010 BCS because it hasn't been released on the website yet, I have suspicion I will not be able to view it until after the election.

The actual job of gathering the data is outsourced from the home office, an independent company performs the work and the sampling system, while flawed, is effective at eliminating sample bias.

It could be argued that crime rates falling actually has little to do with crime fighting initiatives because crime will ebb and flow over time, we may be witnessing a natural drop of crime, or it may be the actions of the judicial system are working, the data collected doesn’t indicate which. That’s why it is important to examine other statistics as well; the police statistics along with probation services and conviction rates combined with a whole array of data needs to be considered together.

Newspapers are reporting that the BCS is definitive, which it most certainly is not, and because of the flaws in it’s system it is not applicably more accurate that police figure, but again these are flawed, as are all the sets of stats we can get, the point most professionals make to the government is that you need to use experts to examine the numbers and find the truth, while the current administrations just parades them to the public.

You’re touching very much upon the issue of misdirection by those who serve us, because if they can misdirect us away from our real issues it benefits them. As mentioned no stats are perfect, because all the gathering techniques are imperfect, the idea is that you gather them all and examine them together, with all the information the hope is that you can find the true scale and disposition of crime.

I do find it intriguing that I could download last years BCS they day it was released, this one has been out for a couple of days and I still can’t view it. Hopefully I can read the report soon and see what in the media is true, which is probably very little, that seems the case all too often.

Yes, it is the idea that people's perception of crime, which is presumably strongly linked to their personal experiences and their personal fear of crime, can be of any value when we could be using statistics of actual crimes!
Surveys can also misrepresent people's views, either to show more fear of crime or less fear of crime.
But I cannot believe that this government would use this type of survey unless it benefited them in some way. I am cynical enough to suggest that New Labour use this measure simply because it benefits them more than using reported crime statistics!
