biomedic ID cards

Posted by michael on July 2, 2009

Perhaps this item could be seen as another example of what would seem to show the incompetence of this government.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson has (apparantly) dropped plans to make ID cards compulsory for pilots and airside workers at Manchester and London City airports.

Mr Johnson said the ID card scheme was still very much alive and a national roll-out of a voluntary scheme was being speeded-up – with London to get them a year early in 2010 and over-75s to get free cards.

But with the exception of foreign workers in the UK, the ID card scheme was going to become a voluntary scheme.

The government have spent millions of pounds on ID cards. The infrastructure for the use of the cards was going to be huge. For example all the businesses, shops, banks etc were gearing up to using ID cards to confirm identities on shop purchases and financial transactions etc.

Now this has gone out the window. Why? I don’t know. The recession is not an excuse because we have had the recession for a while and the government didn’t seem to care about the lack of money then!

All I can think of is that the government wants to be popular. They know that there is a lot of opposition towards compulsary ID cards. Could they be cynical enough to drop the ID card scheme to get votes in the hope that they can reintroduce it on a compulary basis immediately if they get back into power!!!

In my view, yes they could!

Swine flu ‘cannot be contained’

Posted by michael on July 2, 2009

The government has acknowledged that trying to contain the virus is no longer an option.

In other words their attempts to contain the virus has failed. The measure of the failure is that there are currently around 3000 cases of swine flu in the UK but they expect that there may soon be up to 100,000 new cases a day.

Quote from our Prime Minister Gordon Brown:

The UK is one of the best prepared countries to deal with swine flu and “all action necessary” will be taken to stop its spread (april 2009).

The health secretary said UK preparations had been going on for the last five years to cope with a flu pandemic. He added:

the government proposed to use its stockpile of anti-viral drugs to treat patients showing symptoms of the disease, should the virus start spreading in the UK.

I don’t have any confidence at all in any of the utterances  of our government of any of their plans or policies. Nothing they do seems to work, certainly not without having to be reworked!

So the fact that New Labour have failed to contain the swineflu outbreak is not a surprise to me. The fact that we have stockpiled anti-viral drugs which do not appear to have worked against the swineflu virus, is also not a surprise to me!
