This subject came up in a discussion recently.
In the cold light of day how will the MPs forced out from their jobs feel?
There are a few who cannot justify their claims. For example those who claimed payments for non-existant morgages, and possibly those who ‘flipped’ properties to avoid tax or to refurbish a property prior to selling it.
But everyone else were doing exactly what they were allowed to do under the rules! Those administering the payments system verified and accepted the submitted expenses because they were acceptable under the rules.
The government are the people responsible for the rules in place.
A number of MPs have now announced that they will stand down at the next election. Some have been forced out by the party leaders. Others will be deselected by their constituencies before the next election is due.
How would most people feel if they were sacked for following the rules that were imposed on them? Not only that, their employers had actually approved all their actions at that time!
I suspect that the MPs who have lost their jobs in these circumstances are likely to win legal claims fo compensation, and I would not have thought that the payments would be small!
